CAF is Apple's Core Audio Format — the container Logic and GarageBand reach for on export, the format older Voice Memos saved to, and the one macOS uses for its own system sounds. Inside the Apple ecosystem it is perfectly at home; outside it, almost nothing opens it. Windows machines, Android phones, web players, and most editing apps simply shrug. The recordings are fine — the wrapper is the whole problem, and MP3 retires it.
Browsers cannot decode CAF on their own, so the conversion runs on the site's built-in engine — a one-time ~31 MB fetch on first use, cached so later conversions work even offline. The output is a universal 320 kbps MP3 that plays everywhere. If your CAF holds uncompressed audio, expect the MP3 to be far smaller — but MP3 is lossy, so keep the CAF as the master for any production work. Nothing uploads; the file never leaves your device.
How it works
- Drop your file
Any common format, any size. Nothing is uploaded — the tool runs in your browser.
- Convert
Compatible files are repackaged instantly with zero quality loss; others are hardware-transcoded at high quality.
- Download
Your converted file is ready on your device — nothing to wait for, nothing to delete from a server.
Frequently asked questions
What kind of files come out as CAF?
Logic and GarageBand bounces, older Voice Memos recordings, and macOS system-sound workflows are the usual sources. CAF is a container rather than one codec — inside it can hold uncompressed PCM, AAC, ALAC, and more, which is part of why generic players choke on it. The converter decodes whatever the file actually holds and writes a standard MP3.
Why does the first conversion fetch an engine?
Browsers have no native CAF decoder, so the site loads its own — a one-time download of about 31 MB on first use. It stays cached afterward, so later conversions start instantly and even work offline. Your file itself never goes anywhere; only the engine is fetched, and only once.
Do I lose quality going from CAF to MP3?
The output is 320 kbps MP3 — the format's top tier, indistinguishable from the source in normal listening. But MP3 is still lossy: if your CAF holds uncompressed audio from Logic or GarageBand, keep it as the master for mixing and production work, and use the MP3 for sharing and playback.
Are my Voice Memos uploaded to convert them?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser — the CAF is read and the MP3 written on your own device, with no upload, no server, and no copies. Personal recordings are exactly the case this design exists for.
Is my file uploaded to a server?
No. ConvertUno runs entirely in your browser on your own device. Your file never leaves your computer or phone — there is no upload at all.
Is it really free, with no watermark?
Yes. Processing happens on your device, so serving you costs us almost nothing — no watermark, no account, no file-size limit, no daily quota.
