AC-3 is Dolby Digital — the soundtrack format of the DVD and Blu-ray era, and the file you end up holding after demuxing a disc rip, exporting from a home-theater workflow, or pulling audio off a capture card. Receivers love it; almost nothing else does. Your phone, your car, and most music apps will refuse the file outright, which is why the practical move is a one-time convert to MP3, the format every player on earth understands.

Browsers do not decode AC-3 natively, so ConvertUno loads its full decoding engine on first use — a one-time fetch of about 31 MB, cached afterward and working offline from then on. It decodes the Dolby stream, downmixes 5.1 surround to stereo, and writes a 320 kbps MP3. Be clear-eyed about the trade: MP3 has no surround, so the stereo mix is right for headphones and car audio — but keep the AC-3 master if home-theater playback still matters.

How it works

  1. Drop your file

Any common format, any size. Nothing is uploaded — the tool runs in your browser.

  2. Convert

Compatible files are repackaged instantly with zero quality loss; others are hardware-transcoded at high quality.

  3. Download

Your converted file is ready on your device — nothing to wait for, nothing to delete from a server.

Frequently asked questions

Does the MP3 keep the 5.1 surround channels?

No — MP3 has no surround, so the 5.1 mix is downmixed to stereo during conversion. For headphones, laptops, and car stereos that is exactly what you want; nothing there plays 5.1 anyway. If the audio is ever going back through a home-theater receiver, keep the original AC-3 file as your surround master and treat the MP3 as the portable copy.

What quality does the output MP3 use?

320 kbps, the highest bitrate MP3 allows. For a movie soundtrack or concert rip that is transparent for normal listening — the audible difference comes from the downmix to stereo, not the encode. As with any lossy-to-lossy conversion, convert once and keep the result rather than re-converting repeatedly.

Why does the first conversion download something?

No browser decodes AC-3 natively, so the site fetches its own decoding engine on first use — a one-time download of about 31 MB. It is cached after that, so later conversions start instantly and even work offline. Your files still never leave the device; only the engine is downloaded, never anything uploaded.

Is it legal and private to convert my DVD rips?

The conversion itself happens entirely in your browser — no upload, no server, no copies of your files anywhere. Whether ripping a disc is permitted depends on your country's rules on personal backups, which is a question about the rip, not the conversion; this tool simply re-encodes audio you already have on your device.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

No. ConvertUno runs entirely in your browser on your own device. Your file never leaves your computer or phone — there is no upload at all.

Is it really free, with no watermark?

Yes. Processing happens on your device, so serving you costs us almost nothing — no watermark, no account, no file-size limit, no daily quota.
