GIF's superpower is that it is not video: it plays in places video cannot go — README files, forum posts, chat windows, documentation, anywhere an image tag works. Turning an MKV clip into a GIF makes it instantly shareable in all of them, autoplaying, with no player, codec, or unmute button involved. The tool converts the file it is given whole — trim the clip to the moment you want first.
The tool decodes the MKV and renders its frames into an animated GIF right in your browser. GIF trades size for that universality — its 1989-era compression makes long clips enormous — so it shines for short moments: a bug demo, a reaction, a how-to step. For longer clips with sound, MP4 is the better carrier.

Frequently asked questions
How long can a clip be as a GIF?
A few seconds works best. GIF stores frames far less efficiently than video — file size grows fast with length and dimensions — so the sweet spot is short loops. For anything beyond ten seconds or so, convert to MP4 instead.
Why does the GIF look slightly different from the video?
GIF is limited to 256 colors per frame, so smooth gradients may show subtle banding. Motion, text, and screen content survive very well; cinematic color depth is where the format shows its age.
Does the GIF include the MKV's audio?
No — GIF has no audio at all. The format's silence is also its freedom: it autoplays everywhere precisely because there is no sound to mute.
Is my file uploaded to a server?
No. ConvertUno runs entirely in your browser on your own device. Your file never leaves your computer or phone — there is no upload at all.
Is it really free, with no watermark?
Yes. Processing happens on your device, so serving you costs us almost nothing — no watermark, no account, no file-size limit, no daily quota.
