An old AVI clip has a compatibility problem twice over: the format predates modern players, and sending someone a video file is friction anyway. As a GIF, the same moment autoplays in chats, forums, and documents with zero effort on the receiving end — often the easiest way to give an old clip a second life.
AVI needs the site's built-in decoding engine (a one-time load on first use), which then renders the clip's frames into an animated GIF entirely in your browser. Keep the moment short — GIF's ancient compression rewards seconds, not minutes — and the old file itself never uploads anywhere.
How it works
- Drop your file
Any common format, any size. Nothing is uploaded — the tool runs in your browser.
- Convert
Compatible files are repackaged instantly with zero quality loss; others are hardware-transcoded at high quality.
- Download
Your converted file is ready on your device — nothing to wait for, nothing to delete from a server.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the first AVI conversion pause before starting?
Browsers cannot decode AVI natively, so the site loads its own decoding engine on first use — a one-time download of a few seconds. Conversions after that start immediately.
The AVI is long — can I make a GIF of just one moment?
This page converts the clip it is given, so trim first if you can, or convert and accept a large file. GIF sizes balloon quickly with length; the format is happiest with a few seconds of motion.
Will an old low-resolution AVI look bad as a GIF?
Usually it looks right at home — GIF's own limits (256 colors, modest dimensions) are close to old AVI quality anyway, so vintage clips lose little and gain universal playback.
Is my file uploaded to a server?
No. ConvertUno runs entirely in your browser on your own device. Your file never leaves your computer or phone — there is no upload at all.
Is it really free, with no watermark?
Yes. Processing happens on your device, so serving you costs us almost nothing — no watermark, no account, no file-size limit, no daily quota.
